Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission

The Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) program coordinates the prevention of mother to child HIV transmission. Funds are applied to pre- and postnatal consultations, analyses, and prophylaxis medications for pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS.

HTH Initiatives coordinate and subsidize services provided by partner centers that specialize in pediatric and maternal services. In addition, participants receive nutritional and psychosocial support during pregnancy.

Community health members closely monitor expecting mothers and inform medical staff in the event that labor starts. At the time of labor, mother and child receive a combination of anti-retroviral drugs that significantly reduce the transmission of HIV from mother to child. After delivery and depending on specific circumstances, new mothers and the medical director discuss the decision to provide artificial milk. Although nascent, the PMTCT program is one of the most important and crucial elements to the success of HTH Initiatives.
